Gautam Gambhir, the mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League (IPL), is all set to take over as head coach of the Indian cricket team soon. Gambhir was at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Friday to shoot a farewell video as part of his farewell to Kolkata. With this, there was a lot of speculation that Gambhir himself would be the head coach of the Indian team.
However, the delay in the official announcement is due to lack of understanding between the BCCI and Gambhir on certain issues. According to a report in The Indian Express, the announcement has been delayed because there is a bargain between Gambhir and the BCCI over his salary. Rahul Dravid’s annual salary was Rs 12 crore. According to reports, Gambhir has asked for more than this. BCCI secretary Jay Shah had earlier announced that the new head coach will take charge after the next tour of Sri Lanka.
Batting coach Vikram Rathour, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey and fielding coach T Natarajan were among those who completed their tenure. According to reports, the BCCI will soon invite applications for dileep’s replacement. Gambhir also demanded that those he suggested should be appointed as support staff.
Gambhir will be the head coach of the Indian team till the 2027 ODI World Cup. Rahul Dravid’s tenure as head coach ended with the T20 World Cup. National Cricket Academy (NCA) president VVS Laxman accompanied the team as a temporary coach during the tour of Zimbabwe, which began after the World Cup.
