Rohit Sharma will continue as the captain of the Indian ODI cricket team. Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah confirmed the development. In a video message shared by the BCCI, Shah said that Rohit will continue to lead the side till the ICC Champions Trophy tournament to be held in Pakistan in February-March 2005.
Jay Shah expressed hope that Rahul’s captaincy will lead him to victory in the World Test Championship final and the ICC Champions Trophy. There were reports that Rohit and Virat Kohli will retire from ODIs after the 2023 ODI World Cup. However, both of them postponed their decision to retire after failing to reach the title in the tournament.
Rohit, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja had retired from Twenty20 cricket after winning the World Cup. Jay Shah had earlier said that all three will be part of the squad for the Champions Trophy. The cricket board has reposed faith in Rohit’s captaincy, as he has been retained as captain till the next Champions Trophy.
India are currently at the top of the points table in the World Test Championship with six points from nine Tests. India will take on Bangladesh and New Zealand at home, followed by a five-test series against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar series.
